Volunteer
We want volunteering to be fun and easy to fit into your schedule. That’s why we have volunteer opportunities suitable for just about any skill set and schedule. Whether you want to volunteer for a few hours at a community event or you’re looking for a way to pitch in on an ongoing basis, we’ve got something for you.
How to get started
- Contact our Volunteer Chair to be added to our volunteer roster.
- If you haven’t already, join Konstella. We post announcements and committees there so you’ll be notified when there are new opportunities to help.
- Come to a PTA meeting! We always highlight current volunteer needs during our monthly meetings (everyone is welcome!).
- If you’d like to volunteer at Whittier during school hours, you’ll need to be invited by a Whittier staff member. Learn more SPS’ volunteer approval process and contact Whittier’s Front Office for more information.
Current needs
We have open volunteer opportunities that we are looking to fill!
- Field Day Popsicle Lead (1 volunteer): Be a popsicle hero! You’ll work with the Treasurer and Mr. Pule to buy popsicles for Field Day and bring them to school. Whittier PTA will reimburse you for the popsicles and can help coordinate coolers for storage/distribution as needed. Super easy (and fun) way to support Whittier. For more details or to volunteer, please reach out to president@whittierptseattle.org.
- Financial Review Committee Chair + Members (5 volunteers): We need some volunteers to work over the summer to conduct a financial audit as part of our non-profit’s legal requirements. Volunteers will meet briefly once for instructions and then work on a portion of the non-profit transactions for the year independently, finishing with one meeting where results are confirmed and a brief summary is generated. It’s a great way to support Whittier PTA over the summer. For more information or to volunteer, reach out to treasurer@whittierptaseattle.org.
- 2026-2027 Board Positions
- Vice President: This role is perfect for a K-2 family. In this role, you’ll spend the year observing the current President(s) while organizing the Reflections Art Contest (communications + chairing a small committee to review submissions one time), organizing the Nominating Committee to help find board members for the next school year (generally an asynchronous effort), and solicit nominations for the Golden Acorn award to celebrate a dedicated volunteer in our community. In future school years, it’s hoped that a Vice President will nominate themselves as a Co-President (although it’s not required).
- Fundraising Co-Chair: This volunteer will work alongside our seasoned/experienced Fundraising Co-Chair to organize Annual Give (our direct donation campaign generally held at the start of the school year) and help support Spring Fling and Move-a-thon Co-Chairs. Most of this role’s work happens in the late summer and early Fall and is mainly remote.
- Back to Business Chair: Work with our awesome administrative team (Principal Watters, Ms. Monica, and Ms. Rebecca) to learn what support they need for this back to school event generally held the day before school starts for 1st-5th graders. This involves meeting with the admin team once, soliciting volunteers via Konstella and being there on the day to coordinate them, and sending a few emails to the administrative team with updates. Great 1x ask!
- Fall Carnival Co-Chairs: Plan our kids’ favorite event of the year! Date TBD (likely 10/23 or 10/30) and you get to decide what happens/how much we do/how long it lasts! PTA provides the budget, helps reserve building space, and supports other logistics. This year, we’re also thinking of asking classrooms to host activity stations, so you’d just need to facilitate. No fundraising requirement this year (e.g. no collecting money for concessions)–just plan a fun time!
- EDI Co-Chair: Work with experienced an EDI Co-Chair and a dedicated committee to develop programs focused on supporting and educating our community. You’ll work with your Co-Chair to develop a meeting cadence and determine what you’ll want to do as a committee from top to bottom.
- Programs Co-Chair: Work with an experienced Co-Chair to decide how we coordinate After School Programs over the school year, solicit volunteers (as needed), and work with after school enrichment class providers. Generally, this Co-Chair does take on one afternoon shift a week (running typical from 2:15-4pm with downtime between 3-3:45pm). Without this volunteer, we can’t serve After School Programs at Whittier!
- Spring Fling Co-Chairs & Committee: Work with other chairs and volunteers to plan the best party of the year. This adults only fundraiser will be held at the same reserved venue (Stone Way Auto) on either 3/27 or 4/3 (if you volunteer soon enough, you’ll weigh in on the date!). You’ll hold regular meetings to help your committee leads on procurement, decor, food/drink, communication, and the evening’s activities. It’s a fun time with a great group of seasoned volunteers that are already committed to help. It’s a great way to get to know other parents while you volunteer!
- Membership Chair: Send out monthly meeting promotion and update volunteers with agendas and minutes so everyone stays informed. Great remote position that’s probably 1 hour per month. Givebacks platform makes it easy (and we’ll help you get started).
- Events Chair: Support volunteers coordinating in-person events using an established Workbook with details. Some individual work (like creating sign-up geniuses or reserving rooms with SPS) may come up if event chairs need it. Great way to get to know Whittier PTA and support other volunteers.
- Book Fair Chair: Help our librarian work with Phinney Books to design the Book Fair! This generally includes communication, soliciting and organizing volunteers, and putting together a wish list board from teachers for families. Fun way to support our library program. The Book Fair is generally held on the first day of family conferences (a Wednesday afternoon/evening) and during the first two days of school conferences in November.
- Move-a-thon Co-Chairs: Help organize the most FUN fundraiser for our kids! You’ll work with our Tech Support volunteers to set-up the Givebacks page, design and send out communication to families, solicit and organize volunteers, work with Mr. Buck on a bandana project, and ask some community businesses for snack donations. This day-of event has a great playbook that makes it easy to execute!
- Snorkel Rejuvenation Team (3-4 volunteers): We’re looking for a few volunteers to help us make Snorkel, our wonderful creature statue in the front of the school, shine again! We need a team to (on their own schedule!) power wash and then paint the statue to its former glory. All supplies will be provided. Please contact us to join the team!
