Volunteer

We want volunteering to be fun and easy to fit into your schedule. That’s why we have volunteer opportunities suitable for just about any skill set and schedule. Whether you want to volunteer for a few hours at a community event or you’re looking for a way to pitch in on an ongoing basis, we’ve got something for you.

How to get started

  1. Contact our Volunteer Chair to be added to our volunteer roster.
  2. If you haven’t already, join Konstella. We post announcements and committees there so you’ll be notified when there are new opportunities to help.
  3. Come to a PTA meeting! We always highlight current volunteer needs during our monthly meetings (everyone is welcome!).
  4. If you’d like to volunteer at Whittier during school hours, you’ll need to be invited by a Whittier staff member. Learn more SPS’ volunteer approval process and contact Whittier’s Front Office for more information.

Current needs

We have open volunteer opportunities that we are looking to fill!

  • Fall Carnival day-of Volunteers (60 Shifts): Join a group of amazing volunteers that make this beloved community event happen! Shifts are 1-1.5 hours long and you’ll still get to enjoy this event. Learn more and sign-up today!
  • Math Tutors: Whittier is looking for parent and community volunteers to serve as math coaches for our Wildcats and help them become strong, confident mathematicians. No math expertise needed! The Whittier Team will provide all the training and support to help you succeed. As a math coach, you’ll work alongside classroom teachers with small groups of students during classroom activities and projects. You’ll help students build important skills like leadership, collaboration, and communication—all while making math fun and engaging! You can choose your time commitment. Volunteer one or more days during the week; and you can choose a grade level and time that works for you: 3rd Grade: 9:20 – 10:30 a.m., 4th Grade: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m., 5th Grade: 9:00 – 10:15. If you’re interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch with you about next steps. Microsoft Forms
  • Fall Program Volunteers: The After-School Program team is looking for volunteers to fill a few shifts this fall!
Volunteers play an essential role in ensuring programs run smoothly. Volunteers help set up spaces for clubs, support with attendance and dismissal, and typically hang out in the breezeway while clubs are in session. It’s a great opportunity to support the community and also have some quiet time. Learn more about the role and review the available slots. Volunteers who sign up for multiple slots will be eligible for early registration for winter clubs! Reach out to programs@whittierptaseattle.org with any questions!
  • STEAM Lab Setup Volunteers (2-3 volunteers): Help us install peel & stick wallpaper to cabinets/upper wall and magnetic chalkboard peel & stick material + process wall art to create an immersive, environmental experience in our new STEAM Lab! We are also seeking volunteers to help sort through existing supplies and stock the lab so it’s ready for classrooms to begin using it. To learn more and signup, contact us!
  • STEAM Lab Volunteers (10+ volunteers): Would you like to be added to a roster of SPS-approved volunteers that facilitate programs to inspire a love and understanding of STEAM subject matter at Whittier Elementary? We’re looking for volunteers to work with our new Enrichment Coordinator! Volunteers will attend regular shifts working in our new STEAM Lab setting up and helping teachers facilitate activities. If you’d like to be added to the volunteer roster, please contact our Enrichment Coordinator, Mr. Habib, with your name and contact info.
  • Communications Chair (1 volunteer): This role collects and organizes communication requests submitted using our online tool and delivers them to Principal Watters for community emails, the Wildchat Editor for newsletter publication, our Front Office team for flyer printing/distribution and Wildchat newsletter online distribution, and/or posts on Konstella as events or announcements. This role is great for a K/1 parent who wants to get an inside track on everything happening at the school! For more information or to sign-up, please contact us.
  • Membership Chair (1 volunteer): This role helps spread the word about PTA memberships and sends messages to members about key votes and meetings. This work is primarily remote and a great, low-lift introduction to PTA board positions! For more information or to sign-up, please contact us.
  • Family Dance & Game Night Chair (1-2 volunteers): This role works with our Events and Volunteer Chairs to organize an evening community event on 2/12 with board games, dancing, and more in the cafeteria and gym! For more information or to sign-up, please contact us.
  • Co-President (1 volunteer): This role works with the current President to create meeting agendas, email volunteers, run hybrid monthly meetings, and work with Principal Watters and the Front Office throughout the year. For more information or to sign-up, please contact us.
  • Snorkel Rejuvenation Team (3-4 volunteers): We’re looking for a few volunteers to help us make Snorkel, our wonderful creature statue in the front of the school, shine again! We need a team to (on their own schedule!) power wash and then paint the statue to its former glory. All supplies will be provided. Please contact us to join the team!
