Volunteer
We want volunteering to be fun and easy to fit into your schedule. That’s why we have volunteer opportunities suitable for just about any skill set and schedule. Whether you want to volunteer for a few hours at a community event or you’re looking for a way to pitch in on an ongoing basis, we’ve got something for you.
How to get started
- Contact our Volunteer Chair to be added to our volunteer committee.
- If you haven’t already, join Konstella. We post announcements and committees there so you’ll be notified when there are new opportunities to help.
- Come to a PTA meeting! We always highlight current volunteer needs during our monthly meetings (everyone is welcome!).
- If you’d like to volunteer during school hours, you’ll also need to complete an SPS volunteer application (or ensure yours is up-to-date). Learn more here.
Current needs
We have open volunteer opportunities that we are looking to fill!
- Next Year’s PTA Board (multiple volunteers): We’re soliciting volunteers to nominate themselves (or others) for next year’s PTA Board! To learn more about roles and vacancies, please reach out. Open positions include:
- Communications Chair: This role collects and organizes communication requests submitted using our online tool and delivers them to Principal Watters for community emails, the Wildchat Editor for newsletter publication, our Front Office team for flyer printing/distribution and Wildchat newsletter online distribution, and/or posts on Konstella as events or announcements. This role is great for a K/1 parent who wants to get an inside track on everything happening at the school!
- Co-President: This role works with the current President to create meeting agendas, email volunteers, run hybrid monthly meetings, and work with Principal Watters and the Front Office throughout the year.
- Wildchat Editor: This role uses WordPress to post Wildchat newsletters to our website. No communication or graphic design experience required; website skills are easy to learn (there’s a guide!). Newsletters are posted 2-4x monthly. Great remote-only role!
- Fall Festival Chair(s): This role coordinates our Fall community celebration (slated for 10/24 this year). This costume event is all about fun (no fundraising!) and a large volunteer team always steps up to help make it happen. If we don’t fill this role, unfortunately we’ll have to cancel the event. Reach out if you’d like more info!
- Spring Fling Chair(s): This role coordinates our auction fundraiser with the help of a dedicated volunteer team. Spring Fling is our only adults-only party of the year, a beloved Whittier tradition, and is essential to us making our financial goals. Help make it happen!
- Student Directory: This role sends out a Google Form to collect student information in the Fall and then formats it into a downloadable directory for families to use. Great remote-only role!
- Whittier Work Party Volunteers (15+): Save the date (8/30) to join a crew of volunteers to help get our campus ready for the new school year! Please bring work gloves, trash bags, and gardening/lawn care tools to help make the work as fast as possible. We’re also looking for one volunteer to help us power wash Snorkel and a small crew to help us repaint it after! For more information, please contact president@whittierptaseattle.org.
- Snorkel Rejuvenation Team (3-4): We’re looking for a few volunteers to help us make Snorkel, our wonderful creature statue in the front of the school, shine again! We need a team to (on their own schedule!) power wash and then paint the statue to its former glory. All supplies will be provided. Please contact us to join the team!
- Whittier STEAM Lab Program Team (5+): Are you excited about shaping a brand-new educational space? Whittier Elementary and the Whittier PTA are looking for community members to join a STEAM Lab task force this summer! This group of leaders will collaborate on designing the new STEAM Lab space, plan how teachers and volunteers will use it, and help prepare the space and program for launch. Volunteers will attend a kickoff meeting in June, meet periodically over the summer, and participate in hands-on work sessions in late August and early September. No science background is required—just a passion for creating a valuable resource for the Wildcat community! To learn more, contact: president@whittierptaseattle.org.
- Math Tutoring and STEAM Lab Volunteers: Would you like to be added to a roster of SPS-approved volunteers that facilitate programs to inspire a love and understanding of Math and STEAM at Whittier Elementary? We’re looking for volunteers to work with our new Enrichment Coordinator! Volunteers will attend regular shifts working with intervention and extension math students (in small group settings) and/or in our new STEAM Lab setting up and helping teachers facilitate activities. If you’d like to be added to the volunteer roster, please contact us.
- Back to Business (30): Please help us make our back to school event on 9/2 a success! Sign-up for a short volunteer shift here >>
